Walter Corcoran – Coach, Motion for Memory

  • CrossFit Level 1 Trainer
  • CPR and First Aid Certified (Adult & Infant)

In 2010, Walter was 55, 268 lbs, a heart attack survivor, in recovery and realized that he had to make some drastic changes. With help and support from family and friends, he began making changes that were not just temporary but permanent. As Walter says “they were life-saving changes.”

Walter was a life-long jogger/runner and fantasized about having the physique of a thin, competitive runner. Slowly, he began to realize that his pace was slowing down and his waistline was getting bigger. He needed to make a change. He started with HIIT classes and changed his nutrition but there were a lot of “rules” and this plan didn’t feel sustainable. The weight loss began but what came next was a game changer. His eldest daughter challenged him to try CrossFit and he did. Adding weight training and cardio with some nutritional changes is what worked.

Today, Coach Walter is down 65lbs, his pant size went from 44 to 36 and he loves the challenge that this new sport offers. He never thought he would compete, but he does and his accomplishments include: 60+ CrossFit Games On-line Qualifier (4 yrs), ranked 42nd in 2016 in the World, ranked7th in the World his 1st year in one of the technical lifts for the 60+ category. Walter also regularly competes local competitions, coming in first or last, but loving every minute.

“I am not fighting off “old age,” but embracing it and challenging myself every day I walk into the gym. One of my favorite philosophies is summed up by Neil Young, “It’s better to burn out than it is to Rust!” However, I don’t feel at all like I’m burning out, but rather lighting a long-lost ember that has burst into a flame that is a stronger, healthier me.”

When asked if he worries about injury at this age, his answer is always the same – “Not a serious injury yet. Granted some occasional aches and pains, but at 63 years old who doesn’t feel a little discomfort just getting out of bed in the morning.”
