We all know that we should stay away from junk food, but some products can sneakily drain your energy. Three types of foods are below that bring truth to “you are what you eat.”

Sugar

When you eat foods that contain a lot of sugar, carbohydrates are used up quickly and your brain stops making a neuropeptide that makes you feel alert. That’s why you might not feel so energetic after eating a breakfast of donuts, muffins or even some kinds of cereal. Soda is also loaded with sugar – a can of Coke has 39 grams of sugar!

White bread

Foods made from white flour have a high glycemic index, which means your blood sugar will rise quickly, but will fall just as fast, leaving you groggy and unmotivated. Pasta and pretzels are also culprits of this effect. However, some good news: their whole-wheat counterparts have a slower release of energy, so you won’t feel as tired.

Your Favorite Drink at Starbucks

(check out their nutrition information here) Ok, technically this isn’t a food, but those lattes and mochas still add unnecessary fat and sugar to your diet. Their caffeine can achieve a much-needed energy boost, but it’s only temporary. Soon, you’ll experience an energy crash when the sugar wears out.
